About Teacher

The playing of Lyall Duke has received critical press accliam in London, throughout the English provinces, as well as in Paris, Vienna and Berlin. Born in Hobart Tasmania, Lyall Duke received her early training from Miss. Anne McGarry, before being awarded scholarships to study abroad. Four years in Paris studying with Marcel Ciampi, during which time she debuted in Paris, at London’s Wigmore Hall, were followed by three years in London, where she played in the prestigious London Piano Series and broadcast for the BBC. Her studies continued in Munich with Friedrich Wuhrer, and in Italy, where she took part in the masterclasses of Guido Agosti and Alfred Cortot, and was awarded the Diploma of Merit in the Prix Viotti. Since returning to Australia she has played with all the principal Australian orchestras and has appeared as guest soloist at the Adelaide Festival and Melbourne’s Myer Music Bowl. In addition to frequent work with the ABC, Lyall is also a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Her wide solo repertoire has encompassed works by neglected composers such as Hummel , Dussek , Clementi and Arnold Bax, while orchestral performances have included the concertos of Frank Hutchens and the Sydney born composer George Boyle, with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In 1993, Lyall Duke performed the complete solo piano works of Eugene Goosens as a tribute marking the centenary of his birth, receiving the Critics Award for one of the ten best recitals of the year.
